Kusama keeps the camera close and the tension at a low simmer, so every awkward toast and locked door becomes a little test of whether Will is grieving or right. Marshall-Green is convincing as a man nobody wants to take seriously, and John Carroll Lynch makes a single story by the fireplace deeply unsettling. The pacing leans slow, and the payoff, while effective, arrives on schedule. A strong pick if you like your horror social, talky and tense.
Synopsis
Grief and paranoia share the table in The Invitation (2016), Karyn Kusama's psychological thriller set at a gathering in the Hollywood Hills hosted by a man's ex-wife and her charismatic new partner. Logan Marshall-Green plays the uneasy guest, with Tammy Blanchard, Michiel Huisman, Emayatzy Corinealdi and John Carroll Lynch, from a script by Phil Hay and Matt Manfredi.
