Good Boy

Good Boy is uncomfortable in ways that most horror films never bother attempting, using the language and aesthetic of a romantic comedy to slowly reveal something disturbing underneath. Viljar Boe commits fully to the ambiguity of Christian and Frank's dynamic, refusing to explain or moralize about what's happening between them, which forces the audience to sit with a discomfort that never fully resolves. Gard Lokke plays Christian's outward normalcy with a controlled blankness that makes his private world feel even more unsettling by contrast. The film's Norwegian setting and deadpan pacing give it a specific coldness that amplifies the strangeness rather than softening it, and the eight-thousand-dollar budget forces an intimacy the story benefits from. It's a difficult, singular piece of work that earns its unsettling reputation through restraint rather than spectacle.
