Why it’s HorroRated
Carpenter builds this one like a story told around a beach bonfire, starting with John Houseman's spine-tingling prologue and tightening the knot all night long. The fog itself, luminous and seeping under doors, makes a superb movie monster, and Barbeau's warm radio voice turns into the town's only lifeline. Atkins and Curtis bring easy charm, the synth score hums with menace, and old-school effects keep the shadows doing the work. Atmospheric, cozy and genuinely spooky, it's a perfect October night in.
Synopsis
Antonio Bay's centennial goes horribly wrong in The Fog (1980), the supernatural ghost story John Carpenter directed and scored after Halloween and co-wrote with producer Debra Hill. Adrienne Barbeau plays a late-night DJ broadcasting from a lighthouse, with Jamie Lee Curtis, Tom Atkins, Hal Holbrook as the town priest and Janet Leigh, Curtis's real-life mother, organizing the celebrations.
