The Thing is a masterclass in paranoia and practical effects and it's still one of the best horror films ever made. Carpenter strips away any possibility of trust between his characters and lets the dread fill every scene. Rob Bottin's creature work is some of the most inventive and disturbing effects ever put on film. It flopped on release and got reassessed as a masterpiece. Exactly what it is.
Synopsis
Twelve men at a remote Antarctic station encounter an organism that can perfectly imitate any living thing it absorbs. Once it's inside the base, there's no reliable way to know who's still themselves. Carpenter builds the paranoia slowly and releases it all at once, and Rob Bottin's creature work remains some of the most inventive and disturbing effects ever committed to film.
