Why it’s HorroRated
Trading voodoo for a hacked gadget gives this remake its own reason to exist, and Mark Hamill makes the new Chucky needy and almost sweet, so every promise of friendship lands as a threat. The kills are gleefully gory, and the jokes about connected homes and always-listening toys mostly hit. It never matches the original's dread, and the last act gets noisy, but as a nasty, funny ninety minutes it beats its reputation. Treat it as a separate story with no ties to Brad Dourif's Chucky.
Synopsis
Lars Klevberg's Child's Play (2019) rebuilds the 1988 original for the smart-device age: this Chucky is not a possessed doll but a Buddi, a connected companion toy whose safety limits were switched off on the assembly line. Gabriel Bateman plays Andy, a hearing-impaired kid newly moved to Chicago with his mother, Karen (Aubrey Plaza), while Brian Tyree Henry plays a police detective and Mark Hamill gives Chucky his voice. Tyler Burton Smith wrote the screenplay.
