The seven films from Child’s Play (1988) through Cult of Chucky share one continuity, followed by the Chucky television series. Child’s Play (2019) reimagines the premise with a technologically driven doll and does not connect to the original story.
Frequently Asked Questions About Child's Play / Chucky
Does the Child's Play and Chucky franchise have separate chronological and release orders?
No. Unlike some horror franchises, the seven original-continuity films unfold in the same order they were released, so there's no separate story-order sequence to follow. Watching by release date already puts you in the correct chronological order.
Where does the Chucky TV series fit in the movie timeline?
The Chucky TV series picks up after Curse of Chucky (2013) and Cult of Chucky (2017), continuing the same original continuity rather than starting a new one. You don't need to watch the show to follow the seven films, but the show builds directly on backstory they establish.
Is Child's Play (2019) connected to the original Child's Play (1988)?
No, despite sharing the exact same title. The 2019 film is a standalone reboot with a different mythology, a hacked AI toy instead of a voodoo-possessed doll, and even a different voice actor: Mark Hamill instead of Brad Dourif, who voices Chucky in every original-continuity film and the TV series.
Can I skip Seed of Chucky?
Not without losing context. Seed of Chucky introduces Chucky and Tiffany's son, Glen, and sets up plot threads that Curse of Chucky and Cult of Chucky later reference. You can skip it, but you'll be missing setup for characters mentioned in later films.
Which Child's Play and Chucky movies are considered the best?
By HorroRated's verdicts, the original Child's Play (1988) rates Legendary, and Cult of Chucky (2017), the franchise's most recent entry in the original continuity, rates Highly Recommended, the series' second-highest score. Child's Play 3 (1991) is the franchise's lowest-rated original entry, at If You're Curious.
Is a new Chucky movie coming?
Yes. Creator Don Mancini is writing and directing a new Chucky film meant for theaters, continuing the original story and the TV series. No title, cast or release date has been announced.
