Gothika gets underestimated because it was marketed as a glossy studio thriller. Halle Berry's performance is raw and the film builds a sustained paranoid atmosphere that earns its supernatural elements. Mathieu Kassovitz directs with more confidence than the premise might suggest. More effective than its reputation implies.
