Why it’s HorroRated

William Malone's remake has good production design and a real eerie atmosphere. Geoffrey Rush leans into the Vincent Price energy with clear affection and the asylum setting gives the scares a historical weight the original lacked. It goes too big in the third act but earns its place as a reliable Halloween-night watch.

Synopsis

Stephen Price has bought an old sanitarium with a violent history and organized a challenge for a group he's selected for his own reasons. The building's design is the film's strongest argument for itself: a machine built around a specific occult purpose. Geoffrey Rush plays his Vincent Price homage with visible pleasure and the film is darker and stranger than its marketing suggested.
