Why it’s HorroRated
Rob Zombie's Halloween is a legitimate reinterpretation rather than a simple remake and that gives it a value its mixed reception obscures. Demystifying Michael Myers is a real argument with Carpenter's original premise and the first half in particular is strong. Malcolm McDowell as Loomis is underrated. Whether you buy the approach is the whole debate.
Synopsis
Halloween 2007 is structured as two films: a detailed portrait of Michael's institutionalization from age ten and then a remake of Carpenter's original. Zombie is interested in the environment that produced the killer rather than the mystery of unexplained evil, which is a legitimate argument with the source material. Whether demystifying Michael is a gain or a loss is the film's central debate.
