Why it’s HorroRated
Adrift has no connection to Open Water beyond its title and its aquatic dread but the no-ladder premise is clever and the film does a good job of making the situation feel inescapable. It's more survival thriller than horror film and the character dynamics under pressure are reasonably well-handled. A solid underseen piece of situational horror.
Synopsis
A group celebrating a birthday dives into the water and surfaces to find the swim ladder still up and the boat already drifting faster than they can swim. The scenario is the entire film and it holds. Open Water 2: Adrift is a tighter survival horror film than its direct-to-video positioning suggests, built around a problem so simple and so devastating that the dread is almost entirely situational.
