Why it’s HorroRated

Christophe Gans made the rare video game adaptation that captures the feeling of the source material rather than just the plot. The creature design is extraordinary, directly translating Masahiro Ito's iconic imagery to screen. It's messy in its third act but the world-building is exceptional and the atmosphere is unlike anything else in 2000s horror. A real cult film.

Synopsis

Silent Hill is an abandoned coal town wrapped in ash and fog where the ordinary rules of space and time don't apply. Christophe Gans adapts the video game with an understanding of what makes the source material distinct: the creatures are not explained, the world has its own internal logic, and the horror comes from disorientation as much as violence. The production design is extraordinary and the atmosphere is unlike anything else 2000s horror produced.
