Why it’s HorroRated
Frank Grillo turned out to be the secret weapon this series needed. His grim, quiet competence gives the night a hero worth following, and taking the action into the streets finally shows how a whole city behaves once the rules switch off, from armored cars to resistance broadcasts cutting through the gunfire. The supporting characters are sketched in broad strokes and the social commentary arrives at full volume, but the pace barely lets up and the world feels far bigger than the first film's single house. Pick this one when the mood calls for something grimy, nocturnal and closer to a 1970s siege thriller than a haunted house.
Synopsis
Set during the 2023 Purge in greater Los Angeles, The Purge: Anarchy (2014) moves James DeMonaco's premise of twelve lawless hours out of a barricaded house and into a city where nobody is safe after dark. Frank Grillo plays Leo Barnes, an off-duty police sergeant bent on avenging his son, whose plans fall apart when he takes charge of civilians caught outside, played by Carmen Ejogo, Zoë Soul, Zach Gilford and Kiele Sanchez. DeMonaco returned as writer and director for Blumhouse and Platinum Dunes, with Michael K. Williams as the voice of an underground movement fighting back. It plays as a dusk-to-dawn urban survival thriller, moving block by block as the group hunts for somewhere to wait out the night.
