Why it’s HorroRated
The Purge is a better concept than a film, which is the honest assessment. The home invasion mechanics are executed well and the family dynamics are credible. It won't fully use the world it's created. The franchise got there eventually. This entry is worth watching as the premise's origin and as a solid home invasion thriller on its own terms.
Synopsis
The Purge uses its premise primarily as a home invasion thriller following the Sandins through a night that begins secured and becomes compromised. The political concept is more interesting than the film fully develops but the premise generates consistent tension in the domestic setting. The franchise would return to the worldbuilding in later entries.
