Why it’s HorroRated
The Stepford Wives arrived with something specific to say about the domestic ideal and it said it cleanly and without flinching. The horror in this film is quiet and creeping and deeply uncomfortable. Bryan Forbes understood that the scariest version of this story is the one where everyone around you seems perfectly fine with it.
Synopsis
Joanna gives up the city for a quieter life in Connecticut and finds the neighborhood unsettlingly serene. The Stepford wives are pleasant, domestic, and uniformly devoted. Bryan Forbes lets the horror arrive quietly from the direction of conformity, which is the only direction that could make this premise actually frightening.
