The Strangers: Chapter 3

The Strangers: Chapter 3 closes out a trilogy that was shot back to back with Chapters 1 and 2 over the same eight weeks in 2022, and the strain of that production schedule shows in how thin this finale feels. Renny Harlin trades the atmospheric dread the original 2008 film built its reputation on for something closer to an action thriller, and the shift costs the masked killers most of their menace. Madelaine Petsch commits fully to Maya's transformation from victim to something considerably more dangerous, and the increased body count gives the film a momentum the earlier chapters lacked. But explaining who the Strangers are and why they do what they do undercuts the randomness that made Bryan Bertino's original so unsettling, and this closing chapter leans hardest into that mistake. Worth a look if you've stuck with the trilogy this far, though it won't convert anyone the first two chapters lost.
