Why it’s HorroRated

Cohen's sticky satire takes aim at junk food, ad jingles and corporate greed with the energy of a cartoon and the logic of a paranoid dream. Moriarty's drawling, eccentric hero is endlessly entertaining, the fake commercials are hilarious, and the gooey practical effects are gloriously gross. It's scrappy and ragged at the edges, which is part of its charm, and its jokes about consumer addiction have only gotten sharper. A one-of-a-kind B-movie treat to share with friends.

Synopsis

Junk food becomes the monster in The Stuff (1985), Larry Cohen's sci-fi horror satire in which a mysterious, addictive dessert conquers the country's appetite and then its fans from the inside. Michael Moriarty plays an ex-FBI agent turned corporate saboteur, with Andrea Marcovicci, Garrett Morris, and Paul Sorvino as a paranoid militia colonel.
