Shadyside watch-order guide

Fear Street Movies in Order

A mall in 1994, a summer camp in 1978, a witch hunt in 1666 and one very unlucky prom: Shadyside's curse, put in order.

Netflix's Fear Street began in July 2021 as three films released a week apart, each set in a different era of Shadyside, the small town that has produced killer after killer since a witch was hanged there in 1666. Leigh Janiak directed all three, drawing on R.L. Stine's young-adult books, and Fear Street: Prom Queen (2025) later added a standalone slasher set at Shadyside High's 1988 prom.

Story order starts in 1666 and moves forward through Camp Nightwing, the prom and the 1994 mall killings, although Part Three's second half jumps back to 1994 to finish the trilogy. Release order is how the films were built to be watched, and it's the safer choice for a first viewing, since starting in 1666 gives away answers the first two films hold back.

The quick answer

There are 4 Fear Street movies. Watch them in release order the first time: Part One: 1994, Part Two: 1978, Part Three: 1666, then Prom Queen. By story year, 1666 comes first, then 1978, Prom Queen (1988) and 1994.

First time watching? Go in release order: Part One, Part Two, Part Three, then Prom Queen whenever you like. The 1666 chapter answers questions the first two films are still asking, so story order is best saved for a rewatch.

Continuity note

Part Three starts first and ends last

The trilogy was released in reverse story order, one week apart in July 2021. Part One is set in 1994. Part Two is told as a flashback from 1994 to the Camp Nightwing massacre of July 1978. Part Three spends its first half in 1666, in the settlement of Union that later split into Shadyside and Sunnyvale, then returns to 1994 for a second half titled on screen as 1994: Part 2, which picks up right where Part Two ends. Prom Queen is a standalone story with new characters, set at Shadyside High in 1988, six years before Part One.

Frequently Asked Questions About Fear Street

How many Fear Street movies are there?

There are four: Fear Street Part One: 1994, Part Two: 1978 and Part Three: 1666, released a week apart in July 2021, and Fear Street: Prom Queen, released on May 23, 2025. All four are Netflix films based on R.L. Stine's Fear Street books.

What order should I watch the Fear Street movies in?

Release order for a first watch: Part One: 1994, Part Two: 1978, Part Three: 1666, then Prom Queen. The trilogy was designed to unfold that way, and starting with 1666 reveals answers that Parts One and Two hold back. Story order runs 1666, 1978, 1988 (Prom Queen) and 1994, with the second half of Part Three coming last.

Do I need to watch the Fear Street movies in order?

For the trilogy, yes. Parts One, Two and Three tell one continuous story, and each ends by leading straight into the next. Prom Queen is a standalone story with its own characters, so it can be watched at any point, though it's more fun once you know Shadyside's reputation.

Is Fear Street: Prom Queen connected to the trilogy?

It's set in the same town, Shadyside, in 1988, and loosely adapts R.L. Stine's 1992 novel The Prom Queen, but it follows new characters and tells a self-contained story. Matt Palmer directed it, and trilogy director Leigh Janiak served as an executive producer.

Are the Fear Street movies based on the books?

They're inspired by R.L. Stine's Fear Street series of young-adult horror novels, but the trilogy tells an original story rather than adapting particular books. Prom Queen is the first film to take its title and premise from a single novel.

Where can I watch the Fear Street movies?

All four are Netflix originals and stream on Netflix. The trilogy was first planned as a theatrical release by 20th Century Fox, but Netflix acquired it in 2020 and released the three parts weekly in July 2021.

Is there a new Fear Street movie coming?

R.L. Stine said in 2024 that Netflix had more Fear Street films in development after Prom Queen, but as of October 2026 no title, cast or release date has been announced. Fear Street: Prom Queen (2025) is still the latest film.
