Why it’s HorroRated
Deena and Sam's messy, hopeful romance is the beating heart here, and Kiana Madeira and Olivia Scott Welch make the pair easy to root for even mid-massacre. Janiak stages the kills with genuine nastiness, turning a grocery store and a high school into hunting grounds, and the rotating lineup of Shadyside killers gives each set piece its own flavor. The wall-to-wall 1990s needle drops can feel like a mixtape on shuffle, and a few characters mostly exist to set up the next two chapters. Even so, it works as a satisfying slasher by itself and makes pressing play on Part Two feel urgent.
Synopsis
Leigh Janiak opened Netflix's Fear Street trilogy with Fear Street Part One: 1994 (2021), a supernatural slasher set in Shadyside, a town so soaked in murder that its teenagers blame a witch hanged there in 1666. Kiana Madeira plays Deena Johnson, who teams up with her history-obsessed brother Josh (Benjamin Flores Jr.) and friends Kate and Simon (Julia Rehwald, Fred Hechinger) when her ex Sam (Olivia Scott Welch), now living in wealthy neighboring Sunnyvale, becomes a target. Inspired by R.L. Stine's young-adult book series and filmed in Georgia in 2019 alongside both sequels, it debuted July 2, 2021, as the first of three weekly Netflix chapters. Expect a neon-tinged 1990s teen slasher with a queer romance at its core and a mystery built to run across all three films.
