Why it’s HorroRated
Big hair, a dance-off and a killer in a raincoat make this the most purely playful trip to Shadyside yet. India Fowler makes Lori an easy underdog to cheer for, and Lili Taylor has a ball as the vice principal determined to make prom redeem the town's reputation. The kills are gloriously messy, though the mystery is thin and the story never digs into Shadyside's history the way the trilogy did. Go in expecting a breezy 90-minute slasher rather than another chapter of the Sarah Fier saga, and it delivers a fun, gory night in.
Synopsis
R.L. Stine's 1992 novel The Prom Queen loosely inspired Fear Street: Prom Queen (2025), a standalone Netflix slasher set on prom night at Shadyside High in 1988 and the fourth Fear Street film. Matt Palmer directed from a script he wrote with Donald McLeary, casting India Fowler as long-shot candidate Lori Granger, Suzanna Son as her loyal best friend Megan, and Fina Strazza as queen bee Tiffany Falconer. Katherine Waterston, Lili Taylor, Chris Klein and Ariana Greenblatt round out the cast, and the cameras rolled in Toronto and Hamilton, Ontario, during spring 2024. Netflix premiered it May 23, 2025, trading the trilogy's centuries-spanning curse for one blood-soaked night at the dance.
