Why it’s HorroRated

Dominion is the film that resulted when Paul Schrader's original Exorcist prequel got shelved in favor of Renny Harlin's Exorcist: The Beginning, only for Warner Bros. to change course and release Schrader's cut after all, using the same lead actor and much of the same source material. Stellan Skarsgard carries the whole thing on a performance built around real spiritual exhaustion rather than action-movie theatrics, and Schrader's approach favors slow accumulation of dread over jump scares and makeup effects. Vittorio Storaro's cinematography gives the Kenyan setting a weight the Harlin version never achieved, and the World War II framing device grounds Merrin's crisis of faith in something specific rather than abstract. It's a slower, more meditative film than franchise fans might expect, and some of the pacing tests patience in the back half. Worth seeking out as a case study in how differently two directors can approach identical material.

Synopsis

In 1947, former priest and archaeologist Lankester Merrin is sent to excavate a Byzantine church buried in Kenya, still haunted by an incident with Nazi soldiers in occupied Holland that broke his faith. As the dig progresses, tensions rise between the excavation team and the local Turkana people, who believe the site carries a genuine curse, while Merrin takes an interest in Cheche, a young man shunned by the community. Paul Schrader directs this alternate version of Exorcist: The Beginning, made using much of the same cast and crew after Warner Bros. rejected his original cut and hired Renny Harlin to reshoot the story from scratch. The demon Pazuzu, later encountered in The Exorcist, has its origins traced back to this dig.
