Hereditary

Hereditary is a devastating piece of family horror that earns its reputation through sustained formal control rather than shock, building dread across two hours until the final act detonates everything the film has been quietly assembling. Ari Aster uses grief as the entry point for something far more sinister, and Toni Collette gives one of the great horror performances in recent memory, moving from raw maternal anguish to something considerably more unhinged without a single false note. The miniature dioramas Annie builds throughout the film function as an unsettling visual motif, suggesting from the opening frame that the Graham family has never been in control of their own story. Aster's patience with pacing means the horror accumulates rather than arrives, and by the time the film's true intentions become clear, the dread has already fully taken hold.
