Opening on a mid-air drop with no explanation is a terrific hook, and the slow realization of where these people are is the film at its most gripping. Adrien Brody makes an unexpectedly hard-edged action lead, Walton Goggins steals scenes as the motormouthed convict, and Laurence Fishburne's brief, twitchy turn is a highlight. Nimród Antal clearly adores the 1987 film, sometimes to the point of replaying its beats rather than finding new ones, but the bigger hunters and their hounds widen the mythology in satisfying ways. A solid, back-to-basics hunt for anyone who wants more jungle and fewer city streets.

Synopsis

Adrien Brody's mercenary Royce leads a band of abducted soldiers, criminals and one doctor across an alien game preserve in Predators (2010), with Nimród Antal directing a script by Alex Litvak and Michael Finch. Robert Rodriguez produced, reviving a story he had first developed back in 1994, and the cast includes Alice Braga, Topher Grace, Walton Goggins, Danny Trejo, Mahershala Ali, Louis Ozawa and Laurence Fishburne. Shot in Hawaii and Texas, it returns to the original's jungle stalking while adding packs of alien hounds and a bigger, meaner breed of hunter.
