Why it’s HorroRated
Sometimes less is scarier: one hunter, one tracker and a lot of open land turn out to be exactly what the series needed. Amber Midthunder is fantastic as Naru, a heroine who wins through observation, patience and nerve rather than muscle, and the film never stops showing her thinking. Trachtenberg stages the attacks in wide, clear daylight, so every clever trap and brutal kill reads cleanly, and the more primitive Predator is a terrific redesign. Watch with the Comanche dub if you can, because it makes this world feel even more lived in. Newcomers to the series could hardly ask for a better starting point.
Synopsis
A Comanche hunter in the making faces an alien trophy seeker in Prey (2022), Dan Trachtenberg's prequel to Predator, which takes place in 1719 on the plains of North America. Patrick Aison wrote the screenplay, and Amber Midthunder stars as Naru alongside Dakota Beavers as her brother Taabe, with a pack of French fur trappers adding a second threat. Released straight to Hulu, it also arrived with a complete Comanche-language dub voiced by its own cast, a first for a feature film.
