Suspiria 2018 refuses to be compared to the original and insists on being encountered on its own terms, and that's the right call. Guadagnino's interest in German history and maternal horror gives the witch coven a political dimension the 1977 film didn't have. Dakota Johnson is more effective than initial reviews acknowledged and the finale goes somewhere genuinely disturbing.
