Why it’s HorroRated
The deserted after-hours hallways give the film a decent creepiness, and the backstage gallows prop makes a memorable centerpiece. The found footage rules get bent constantly, though, and the characters are hard to root for, especially the camera-happy bully filming everything. A couple of the jump scares work in a crowd. It's a fair pick for a teen sleepover, less so for anyone who has seen the found footage classics.
Synopsis
A cursed school play sits at the heart of The Gallows (2015), a Blumhouse-produced found footage chiller from filmmakers Travis Cluff and Chris Lofing about high school students reviving a production that ended in tragedy two decades earlier. Reese Mishler, Pfeifer Brown, Ryan Shoos and Cassidy Gifford play students trapped in the school overnight.
