Why it’s HorroRated
The Grudge is a polished J-horror crossover that loses some of the original's chaos but gains in production value. The non-linear structure is effectively disorienting and the imagery of Kayako and Toshio is still unsettling. Sarah Michelle Gellar is a capable lead. A competent crossover that delivers enough scares.
Synopsis
Karen Davis substitutes for a colleague at a residence in Tokyo and sets something loose that operates without explanation or mercy. Takashi Shimizu recreates his original Ju-On structure for the American version and the non-linear storytelling distributes the dread across multiple characters and timelines. The imagery of Kayako and Toshio is still unsettling.
