Why it’s HorroRated
Raw, sun-scorched and genuinely mean, Craven's second feature turns a road trip into a war of attrition, and the scrappy budget only adds to the grit. What lingers is the mirror it holds up: the tidy Carters and the clan in the hills have more in common than either side would admit. Some performances wobble and the pace sags before nightfall, but the final stretch is relentless. A key piece of seventies American horror, and essential viewing before the 2006 remake.
Synopsis
Wes Craven wrote, directed and edited The Hills Have Eyes (1977), a gritty survival horror film about the Carters, a vacationing family left without a working vehicle deep in the Nevada wasteland, where a clan of feral cannibals lives among the rocks. Susan Lanier, Dee Wallace and Robert Houston play members of the family, and Michael Berryman's face on the poster became an enduring horror image.
