Why it’s HorroRated
The Mummy 2017 is a better film than its reputation, which was permanently damaged by the weight of franchise ambition it was forced to carry. Tom Cruise commits to the material and Sofia Boutella is a compelling Mummy. The shared universe scaffolding is the problem, not the horror film underneath it.
Synopsis
The Universal Monsters reboot attempts to launch a shared universe with a female mummy and Tom Cruise as the human lead. Alex Kurtzman's film suffers from the weight of franchise setup over story and the tonal uncertainty between action blockbuster and horror film is never resolved. The shared universe concept didn't survive this entry.
