Why it’s HorroRated
Polinger finds horror in the ordinary cruelty of boys, and it's deeply uncomfortable in the best way: every locker-room joke and pool drill feels like a trap. Blunck gives a nervy, heartbreaking performance as a kid trying to read the room, and the film slides toward body horror and paranoia so gradually you hardly notice the shift. It's slow and quiet by design, so anyone wanting jump scares should look elsewhere. A striking debut that will stay with you.
Synopsis
Charlie Polinger's debut feature, The Plague (2025), sets its psychological horror at a summer water polo camp where an anxious twelve-year-old tries to win over a pack of popular boys who torment an outcast. Everett Blunck, Kayo Martin and Kenny Rasmussen lead the young cast, and Joel Edgerton, who also produced, plays their coach.
