Carrie is about what sustained cruelty does to a person over time, and De Palma builds the prom sequence with operatic patience so that when it finally breaks, it breaks completely. Sissy Spacek and Piper Laurie are both extraordinary. The ending doesn't let you go. It never did.
Synopsis
Carrie has grown up between a fanatic mother at home and daily torment at school. When what looks like a kindness at prom turns into one final humiliation, De Palma treats the aftermath less like horror and more like tragedy.
