Why it’s HorroRated

The Woman in Black is Hammer-style gothic filmmaking done with craft and a real commitment to atmosphere over jump scares. James Watkins uses the period setting and the marsh location to build dread and Daniel Radcliffe carries the film on a mostly physical performance. One of the better supernatural horror films of its decade.

Synopsis

Kipps arrives at the Eel Marsh estate and starts encountering evidence that the house and its surrounding marsh carry something malevolent. James Watkins uses the period setting and the isolated location to revive Hammer's gothic horror sensibility with real craft. Daniel Radcliffe's quiet performance anchors a film that earns its atmosphere.
