Why it’s HorroRated

Anya Taylor-Joy carries it: unblinking, childlike and frightening in the same breath, she makes Morgan far more interesting than the script around her. Paul Giamatti's one-scene psychological evaluation is a terrific slow squeeze of tension. The second half turns into a familiar dash through the woods and the plot telegraphs its surprises, but the cast keeps it watchable. Worth a spin if you liked Ex Machina and want something rougher.

Synopsis

Ridley Scott produced and his son Luke Scott directed Morgan (2016), in which a corporate consultant must judge a synthetic being after a violent incident at a secluded research compound. Kate Mara and Anya Taylor-Joy lead a cast with Paul Giamatti, Toby Jones, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Michelle Yeoh and Rose Leslie.
