Dolan pushes the M3GAN formula into steamier, stranger territory, and Lily Sullivan is excellent as a machine learning desire, flipping from tender to terrifying with the smallest shift in her gaze. The film has interesting things to say about grief and the fantasy of a partner built to order. It's less funny than M3GAN and the thriller beats are predictable, but the violence is precise and the central performance holds it together. Fans of the franchise will want to queue it up.
Synopsis
Spun off from M3GAN, Soulm8te (2026) is an erotic sci-fi thriller directed by Kate Dolan from a script she wrote with Rafael Jordan, following a grieving widower who tests an android companion for the tech company that bought his employer. Lily Sullivan plays the android and David Rysdahl the engineer, with Claudia Doumit in support.
