Why it’s HorroRated
Nearly sixty years on, the farmhouse still feels like a pressure cooker. Romero gets as much terror from the people inside, bickering over doors, plans, and who gives the orders, as from the shuffling shapes in the yard, and that tension is the secret engine of every zombie story since. Duane Jones carries the film with steady, furious intelligence as Ben, a casting choice that gave the story a charge 1968 audiences couldn't ignore. The grainy black-and-white photography makes it feel like a dispatch from the end of the world. Every zombie fan's education begins in this farmhouse.
Synopsis
George A. Romero's original Night of the Living Dead (1968) is the black-and-white independent horror film that created the template for the modern flesh-eating zombie. Barbra (Judith O'Dea) flees a graveyard attack to a remote farmhouse, where Ben (Duane Jones) takes charge and a quarreling group of strangers argue over whether to fortify the house or hide in the cellar while radio and TV reports describe the dead rising across the region. Shot around Pittsburgh on a shoestring by Romero and co-writer John A. Russo, it launched the Living Dead series and was remade by Tom Savini in 1990.
