Why it’s HorroRated

Orphan is a better film than its premise deserves almost entirely because of Isabelle Fuhrman. The script gives her the room to play the character from the inside and she delivers something unsettling across multiple registers simultaneously. The twist reframes everything and holds up under scrutiny. A solid, well-crafted thriller.

Synopsis

The film's central trick is a genuine surprise that reframes the entire picture and Isabelle Fuhrman's performance is what makes it work at every stage. The script gives her room to play the character from the inside and she delivers something unsettling across multiple registers simultaneously. A mainstream horror film with more craft than the genre usually receives at this budget level.
