Orphan First Kill is a prequel that found the one interesting angle on the Esther Coleman story: the family she chose had secrets that put them in the same category as her. Isabelle Fuhrman gives the same dedicated performance and the film uses the dark comedy register more honestly than it needed to. A genuine surprise.
