Queen of the Damned is a loose, stylish adaptation that prioritizes aesthetic over faithfulness and Aaliyah as Akasha is a magnetic presence. Stuart Townsend does what he can with Lestat. The film has enough visual energy to sustain it even when the story loses focus. A flawed but enjoyable piece of early 2000s vampire horror.
Synopsis
The vampire Lestat steps into the modern world and builds an audience for his music without much concern about exposure. Queen Akasha wakes to the sound and decides he'll be useful to her. Aaliyah as Akasha is the film's primary asset and the industrial-goth aesthetic around her holds up better than the narrative around them both.
