Why it’s HorroRated

Grief has rarely looked this gorgeous. Proyas shoots Detroit like a cathedral that's been set on fire, all wet neon, smoke, and silhouettes on rooftops, and every frame feels like the cover of a record you'd have worn out in 1994. Brandon Lee plays Eric with a wounded playfulness, joking one second and shattering the next, so the revenge never turns cold. Michael Wincott's gravel-voiced Top Dollar is a villain worth the trip, and the crow itself becomes the film's eerie, watchful heartbeat. If you want horror with a broken heart and a killer soundtrack, this is the one to queue up.

Synopsis

Adapted from James O'Barr's comic, The Crow (1994) is Alex Proyas's gothic revenge fantasy in which guitarist Eric Draven, murdered alongside his fiancée Shelly on the night before Halloween, claws his way back from the grave a year later. Played by Brandon Lee in what became his last performance, Eric stalks a burning, rain-lashed Detroit and the gang run by Michael Wincott's velvet-voiced Top Dollar, while Ernie Hudson's police officer and a skateboarding kid named Sarah try to understand what he has become. Its storm-and-neon look and alternative-rock soundtrack made it a touchstone of 1990s goth culture.
