Stigmata is a slick, visually aggressive supernatural thriller that takes its premise seriously enough to generate real unease. Patricia Arquette is raw in the lead and Gabriel Byrne brings weight to the skeptical priest role. The film has something to say about institutional religion versus faith that gives it a subtext most horror of the era avoided. More interesting than it gets credit for.
Synopsis
Frankie Paige has no framework for what's happening to her body while Father Kiernan approaches the investigation from an institutional church with reasons to control the outcome. Patricia Arquette plays the physical suffering as something real rather than theatrical, and the film uses that grounding to give its conspiracy elements more weight than they'd otherwise carry.
