Why it’s HorroRated
The Witches works because Nicolas Roeg shoots it like an actual horror film rather than a safe kids movie. Anjelica Huston's Grand High Witch is one of the great villain performances, full stop. The Jim Henson creature effects are unsettling. It's darker than it has any right to be given what it's based on, which is exactly why it holds up.
Synopsis
A young boy recovering from his parents' deaths is staying in a British seaside hotel when he discovers an annual witches' convention in full swing. Nicolas Roeg shoots it like an actual horror film rather than a safe kids movie. Anjelica Huston's Grand High Witch is one of the great villain performances and the Jim Henson creature effects are still genuinely unsettling.
