Why it’s HorroRated
New Nightmare predates Scream's meta-horror by two years and does something more interesting with the concept of Freddy as an ancient evil rather than a franchise character. Wes Craven is more disciplined here than in most of the later Elm Street output. It's slow and uneven in places but the ambition is real and the best parts land.
Synopsis
A real Freddy is trying to enter the world through the film that contains him, which puts Heather directly in his path. Craven's concept predates Scream's meta-horror by two years and does something more interesting with the idea than simply commenting on genre conventions. Uneven in places but the underlying premise is smart.
