Why it’s HorroRated
Ten hours is a lot of Purge, and the extra room proves both a gift and a burden. The show explores corners the movies skip, from Purge-night business deals to a death cult devoted to the ritual, while Season 2's look at the months between Purges is the boldest idea in the whole franchise. Episodes stretch thin in places and the TV budget shows during the bigger set pieces. Gabriel Chavarria and Amanda Warren keep their storylines worth following all the same, and if the films left you curious about how ordinary people get by in this world, the show offers plenty to chew on.
Synopsis
Created by James DeMonaco for USA Network, The Purge (2018–2019) carries the film franchise into television across two seasons and 20 episodes. Season 1 stretches the 2027 Purge over ten episodes, following Gabriel Chavarria's Marine Miguel Guerrero, Jessica Garza as his sister Penelope, Amanda Warren's executive Jane Barbour, and Colin Woodell and Hannah Emily Anderson as the Betancourts. Season 2 changes approach, tracing the year between two Purges through characters played by Paola Núñez, Max Martini, Derek Luke and Joel Allen. Filmed in New Orleans, the show uses its longer format to dig into the politics, money and private grudges the films only sketch.
