American Horror Story basically invented the modern prestige horror anthology format and at its best it's unmatched on television. Murder House and Asylum are as well-crafted and as committed as anything the genre produced that decade. The quality shifts season to season, which is the honest thing to say, but the highs are high enough to make the whole run worth your time. Ryan Murphy swings big and sometimes misses, but you always know he's swinging.
Synopsis
Ryan Murphy's anthology drops its rotating ensemble into a fresh horror premise each season, from a haunted Los Angeles mansion to a 1960s psychiatric institution to a coven of modern witches. Every installment carries a new premise, a new tone, and a new set of things to be disturbed by. Murphy's commitment to going further than you expect is the connective tissue.
