Why it’s HorroRated
Jean-Pierre Jeunet brings a French fairy-tale strangeness to the series, and nothing else in it looks or moves quite like this. Sigourney Weaver clearly relishes playing a Ripley who isn't entirely human anymore, sly and unsettling where she used to be steadfast, while Winona Ryder, Ron Perlman and Dominique Pinon make a scrappy crew. Joss Whedon's script swings between grim body horror and wisecracks, and the tone doesn't always hold together. An underwater chase through a flooded kitchen is a genuine set-piece highlight, though the grotesque final stretch divides fans. Come for the weirdness and the performances rather than the scares.
Synopsis
Two hundred years after the earlier films, Alien Resurrection (1997) brings Ellen Ripley back as a clone aboard the military research vessel Auriga, where scientists are trying to breed and tame the creatures. Jean-Pierre Jeunet directed from a screenplay by Joss Whedon, with Sigourney Weaver joined by Winona Ryder, Ron Perlman and Dominique Pinon as a band of mercenary smugglers. The fourth Alien film leans into grotesque body horror and dark humor.
