Mimic is a better film than its troubled production history would suggest and del Toro's eye for atmosphere and production design is already fully evident. The subway setting is used effectively and the creature design is unsettling. It's not the film it could've been but it's more than enough to recommend.

Synopsis

Tyler's solution was always meant to be temporary, but the insects she created have been evolving underground. Del Toro's studio debut is a creature feature with better production design and atmosphere than most of its competition. The subway setting is used with real spatial intelligence and the tension builds from the gap between what the characters know and what the audience sees.
