Why it’s HorroRated

Candyman 3: Day of the Dead is a straight-to-video franchise entry that lost almost everything that made the original special, and there's little reason to seek it out beyond franchise curiosity. Tony Todd remains committed to the role and gives it more dignity than the material deserves, but the film reduces Candyman's tragic racial history to background noise in favor of a generic slasher plot involving corrupt cops and a stolen art collection. Shot on a budget under a million dollars in eighteen days, the seams show constantly, and the racial commentary that gave the first two films real weight is almost entirely absent here. It's watchable in the way most direct-to-video 90s horror sequels are watchable, which is to say barely. For completionists only.

Synopsis

Twenty-five years after the events of Farewell to the Flesh, Caroline McKeever is a Los Angeles artist unknowingly descended from the Candyman himself. When her friend goads her into saying his name five times at a gallery opening, the Candyman returns to frame her for a string of murders and claim her soul for his own. Tony Todd reprises the role for the third time, but director Turi Meyer's low-budget production strips away the social commentary that made Bernard Rose's original film resonate, leaving a functional but forgettable slasher.
