Deep Blue Sea is the platonic ideal of a late-90s creature feature. It moves fast, the kills are inventive, and it has the single best unexpected death in creature feature history. Renny Harlin directs with the efficiency of someone who knows exactly what the audience wants and Samuel L. Jackson gives it some class. Just turn it on and enjoy.
Synopsis
A pharmaceutical team runs illegal experiments on makos at a sea-based facility, and when a storm damages the station the enhanced sharks start working the situation to their advantage. Renny Harlin knows how to pace a creature feature and the film's willingness to kill major characters without warning gives it more tension than the genre usually manages. That unexpected death is still the best one in creature feature history.
