Why it’s HorroRated

Paul W.S. Anderson's Resident Evil isn't particularly faithful to the games but it's a competent and energetic action-horror film. Milla Jovovich is an effective lead and the Hive setting is well-used. The laser grid sequence is legitimately creative. It launched a franchise that ran for two decades, which tells you enough.

Synopsis

An Umbrella Corporation facility locked down after a T-virus outbreak gets a team sent in to assess. Paul W.S. Anderson builds the film around set pieces rather than narrative and the laser corridor sequence is the most memorable action-horror moment the franchise produced. Milla Jovovich establishes Alice as an anchor with enough screen presence to sustain the series.
