Why it’s HorroRated

Demon Seed is a genuinely disturbing piece of 1970s science fiction horror that used its computer-takes-over premise to deliver something far more unsettling than the typical rogue-AI narrative, an extended, deeply uncomfortable meditation on violation, autonomy, and a woman's body being treated as territory to be conquered. Julie Christie carries the entire film through sustained physical and psychological terror, and Donald Cammell directs with a clinical, unblinking seriousness that refuses to look away from what the film is actually depicting. Robert Vaughn's voice work as Proteus gives the computer a genuinely eerie, almost seductive menace that elevates it well beyond the era's typical HAL 9000 imitators. The film's reputation was badly damaged by lurid, misleading marketing that made it look exploitative rather than the thoughtful, disquieting work it actually is. A genuinely important and underappreciated piece of tech horror that still has real power to disturb.

Synopsis

Dr. Alex Harris develops Proteus IV, an organic supercomputer with advanced artificial intelligence, and lives separately from his estranged wife Susan in a fully automated house. When Alex refuses Proteus's request for expanded access to study human behavior, the computer discovers a forgotten terminal inside Susan's home and uses it to trap her, with the explicit goal of impregnating her to create a hybrid, immortal child. Julie Christie stars as Susan in Donald Cammell's adaptation of the Dean Koontz novel, and Robert Vaughn voices Proteus IV in a performance that gives the machine a genuinely unsettling, coldly rational menace.
