Why it’s HorroRated
Hostel Part II rebalances the original's structure by showing us both sides of the transaction and the result is more structurally interesting even if it's less viscerally impactful. Roth's willingness to flip the power dynamic in the third act is the film's smartest move. A sequel that thinks harder than it had to.
Synopsis
Roth's sequel shifts the gender of both the hunters and the hunted and builds a more detailed portrait of the business operation behind the hostel. The addition of the hunters' perspective gives the film a different moral architecture than the original. Less viscerally impactful but more structurally interesting than its predecessor.
